This code has been originally taken from a webpage posted by PTAM. This article explains how you can shutdown Windows using Visual Basic and API calls.

(All Versions)

Copy the following code into a module. Put this code inside the action of a command button to have it execute on click of the button.

RebootNT(TRUE)

Change the RebootNT to whatever action you require(based upon the subs declared) and replace TRUE with FALSE if you do not wish to force Windows to shutdown. Within each sub there is a line "If Force Then Flags = Flags + EWX_FORCE". You can replace EWX_FORCE with EWX_FORCEIFHUNG if you wish Windows to only be forced if hung.

Code:
Option Explicit
'API constants
Private Const EWX_LOGOFF = 0
Private Const EWX_SHUTDOWN = 1
Private Const EWX_POWEROFF = &H8
Private Const EWX_REBOOT = 2
Private Const EWX_FORCE = 4
Private Const EWX_FORCEIFHUNG = &H10
Private Const TOKEN_ADJUST_PRIVILEGES = &H20
Private Const TOKEN_QUERY = &H8
Private Const SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED = &H2
Private Const ANYSIZE_ARRAY = 1
Private Const VER_PLATFORM_WIN32_NT = 2
